What is the Engineering Pre-First Year (EPFY) Program?
The Engineering Pre-First Year Program, administered by the College of Engineering, is an intensive 4-week academic program designed to enhance student success at the Wayne State University.   EPFY students have an excellent opportunity to enhance their academic skills, promote their personal and professional development, develop a peer support network, and familiarize themselves with the campus and its resources. Specifically, the program consists of:
  • course in mathematics, introductory computer programming, chemistry, and engineering problem-solving, all in preparation for the first-year required courses
  • orientation classes, seminars, and workshops focused on personal, professional, and academic development that will aid in the transition from high school to college, and
  • personal attention of instructors and academic advisors in a rigorous, yet supportive environment.

How will EPFY Program benefit me?
The EPFY Program allows you to preview the expectations for first-year engineering students while further enhancing your academic skills. EPFY classes are taught by faculty, staff, and graduate student instructors who teach courses during the academic year. You will get first-hand experience of the style and rigor of college classes, but in a more structured and supportive environment than is typically the case during the academic year. Your participation in the EPFY Program will also allow you to familiarize yourself with the campus, identify offices which can provide you with necessary information, and create the opportunity to establish support networks among your peers. Moreover, EPFY participants will learn and practice time management and study skills techniques that are considered critical for academic success and excellence.

What will a typical week in EPFY Program look like?  Click here for sample schedule.
The weekly EPFY schedule consists of daily classes, structured study times, a variety of workshops, and occasional group activities. A sample weekly schedule has been included to give you an idea of what to expect. Even though the EPFY schedule is very structured, it is representative of how first-year engineering students must individually structure their own schedules to excel academically and take advantage of the many personal and professional development activities available on campus. First-year engineering students are advised to spend 30-40 hours per week on academic work outside of class, and the EPFY schedule is designed to simulate this expectation. We believe the EPFY schedule offers students an excellent opportunity to develop the time management skills that will aid them during their first year.

When are the typical dates of the EPFY program?   Will I have to pay for parking everyday?
The Engineering Pre-First Year Program usually will runs from the 1st week of July through the 1st week of August.   These dates include the Program Kick-off Meeting /Orientation and a Closing Program administered by the College of Engineering.   The EPFY Program is a commuter program and students should plan to be on campus daily from 9am – 4:30pm. The EPFY Program will provide parking permits and lunch passes for the entire length of the program.
