Task Sequencing System
The Task Sequencing System (TSS) assists users with tasks requiring sequential operations, such as simple assemblies and packing. The system incorporates up to 16 component bins with a voice output device and a TSS Controller to guide and “error-proof” the activities of the users. By incorporating error-proofing techniques into the TSS, the percentage of error in each assembly or packing process is significantly reduced. Error-proofing each process also reduces the number of troublesome cognitive responsibilities that may hinder some users from successfully completing their projects.
The TSS incorporates several features to meet the challenges of maintaining the user’s attention span while reducing cognitive demands. Indicator lamps (LEDs) on the top of each bin guide the user to select items from the correct bin, and passive infrared sensors detect each of the user’s selections. Voice prompting from a variety of voice output devices may also be incorporated into the session to help guide users from bin to bin and to alert users and staff if an incorrect bin is selected.
By using both audible and visual error-proofing techniques, the TSS enables workers with cognitive disabilities to stay focused and work independently for long periods of time. The system also aids in freeing staff for other activities. Most importantly, however, working with the TSS gives workers with cognitive impairments a sense of accomplishment that is nearly unobtainable with alternative systems.
