Graduate Application Guideline

GRADUATE STUDY APPLICATION GUIDELINE
The Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science has very strong M.S. and Ph.D. programs in chemical engineering as well as in materials science and engineering, with a current graduate enrollment of approximately 120 students, including about 50 Ph.D. students. On average, about 30 new students initiate their study in our graduate programs each year.

Application Package Submission:
Those interested in applying for graduate study in our programs should send
application packages directly to the department (with attention to a specific graduate program director). The Department will process and then forward it to the Graduate School. Each package should include the following materials, which should be assembled in the following order:

1. A completed University Application Form.
2. University Graduate Application fee (a check of $50.00 payable to Wayne State University).
3. An original copy of the applicant’s undergraduate transcript (English version, sealed in an envelope by the applicant’s university registrar office).
4. An original copy of the applicant’s graduate transcript, if applicable (English
version, sealed in an envelope by the applicant’s university registrar office).
5. A copy of the applicant’s TOEFL score report (the original should be arranged to be sent to Wayne State University), if the applicant is not a U.S. citizen.
6. A copy of the applicant’s GRE score report (the original should be arranged to be sent to the University). A GRE score is required if applying for financial
support.
7. A copy of the applicant’s TSE score report, if available.
8. Three recommendation letters from the applicant’s university professors
(sealed in envelopes by the references).
9. A copy of the applicant’s Resume.
10. A copy of the applicant’s Personal Statement.
11. Selected publications, and award and patent certificates, if any.
12. An e-mail address and a phone number where the applicant can be
contacted.
Note: Each application package should contain all listed materials. Separate
submissions of required materials may significantly delay departmental
evaluation.

Mailing Address:
Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, 5050 Anthony Wayne Drive, Wayne State University, Detroit, MI 48202, U.S.A.

Application Deadlines:

For those applying for financial support: February 15 of each year

For those NOT applying for financial support:
For domestic applicants: June 1 of each year
For international applicants: April 1 of each year

Financial Aid Opportunities:
The Department provides various types of financial support to new graduate
students in the form of graduate teaching assistantships (GTA’s), graduate research assistantships (GRA’s), and University Fellowships. The opportunities for financial support in the Department are increasing, reflecting its rapidly growing research activities. Ph.D. applicants are given the highest priority for financial support. Typically, the department offers financial support to approximately 15 new students. A typical annual financial support package is as follows:

Salary (9 month basis) ~ $ 14,500
Tuition ~ $ 7,000
Health Insurance ~ $ 3,700
Summer Stipend (3 months, if involved in research) ~ $ 4,500
Total ~ $ 29,200

Financial support decisions are made in March every year based on the application
materials received by February 15. Financial aid is awarded competitively to applicants
with outstanding academic records. Typically, supported students have TOEFL scores
above 600 (or 250 for Computer-based Test), and GRE scores above 1,900 (General)
or 1,300 (Verbal and Quantitative).

Application Status Checking:
Package submission status. Each applicant may write an e-mail to
gradinfo@che.eng.wayne.edu to inquire about the submission status, three weeks after
the material mailing date. In general, the Department should be able to acknowledge
the receipt of application package, via e-mail only, within two weeks after receiving the
package.

Admission status:
Applicants should contact the University Admissions Office directly to check their admission status. The Department does not respond to e-mails regarding admission.

Financial aid application status:
The Department will contact directly those applicants who are being considered for financial support by the Department Graduate Committee. Applicants who have received notification of financial aid consideration may contact the Department by e-mail regarding a final decision.
